In recent years, there have been numerous discoveries of submerged structures and even entire cities which remained hidden for thousands of years.
Bathymetric equipment is the underwater equivalent to hypsometry or topography. The discovery was even aired on TV. “The pyramid is located at around 40 meters beneath the surface between Sao Miguel and Terceira Islands,” a reported explains in a video that’s been uploaded to YouTube. Pyramids under the waters of Cuba were discovered by two scientists Paul Weinzweig and Pauline Zalitzki. They found the ruins of ancient buildings for about a mile below the sea and considered them to be Atlantis. Paulina found elsewhere in Cuba ancient descriptions and symbols that was identical to those on the waterfront structures below. The precise age of the underwater site is also unknown, although Cuban archeologists in 1966 excavated a land-based megalithic structure on the western coast, close to the new underwater discovery. Thus would begin the strange tale of a purported ancient underwater city lying under the waters of Cuba, which has drawn to it all manner of debate and discussion. At the time the crew were utilizing sonar in about 2,000 feet of water when they began getting startling images that.
These submerged structures point to a much different time on Earth when our planet’s oceans were very different. Tales of sunken empires have been present in societies around the world for thousands of years. While most of them are believed to be a myth, such as those of Ancient Atlantis and Ancient Mu, other “tales” have proven to be more than just stories.
ATLANTIS, THE LOST EMPIRE, AND THE SUBMERGED CITY OFF THE COAST OF CUBA, AN MYTH OR REALITY?
Well over a decade, a team of underwater explorers from a Canadian exploration company was mapping the ocean floor and near the western coast of Cuba. While exploring, the teams sonar equipment detected all of a sudden, a bewildering array of stone structures, located about 650 meters below the surface. the team of researchers had found a series of unusual formations; smooth blocks, crests, and different geometric shapes at the bottom of the ocean.
The company, responsible for the finding: Advanced Digital Communications, suggested that the structures found off the western coast of Cuba were ancient monuments of an unknown ancient civilization. Symmetrically arranged stones, which appeared to be remnants of some type of ancient urban development certainly point towards a highly developed society that could have inhabited the region in the distant past.
But what happened to this incredible discovery that was on the news over a decade ago? Why are we not exploring any further? Is it possible that this discovery will change the way we look at history? Our origins? many people would agree that there are hundreds of discoveries that are kept from society on purpose. Is the sunken city off the coast of Cuba one of them?
Geologist Manuel Iturralde remained open-minded saying: “These are extremely peculiar structures, and they have captured our imagination,” said Iturralde, who is director of research at Cuba’s Natural History Museum. Iturralde has studied countless underwater formations over the years, but said, “If I had to explain this geologically, I would have a hard time.”
Estimating that it would have taken 50,000 years for such structures to have sunken to the depth at which they were said to be found, Iturralde added: “50,000 years ago there wasn’t the architectural capacity in any of the cultures we know of to build complex buildings.” A specialist in underwater archeology at Florida State University added “It would be cool if they were right, but it would be real advanced for anything we would see in the New World for that time frame. The structures are out of time and out-of-place.”
Many researchers remained extremely skeptical about the discovery since a lot of people jumped to conclusions drawing parallels to the ancient Atlantean empire. Soon after the discovery was made, the National Museum and National Geographic displayed great interest in further investigating the area, but for some unknown reason, it never happened. Ten years after the incredible discovery was made by Pauline and Paul Weinzweig, owners of Advanced Digital Communications, the discovery that was labeled as the finding of Cuba’s Atlantis and the lost city of the Caribbean was simply forgotten.
THE UNDERWATER CITY NEAR CUBA IS NOT THE FIRST UNDERWATER CITY TO BE DISCOVERED
Actually, there have been quite a few underwater cities that have been discovered in recent years. The discovery of the legendary ancient city of Dwarka in the gulf of Cambay is certainly one of those incredible discoveries. The ruins are located131 feet below the surface of the sea in the Bay of modern-day Dwarka, one of the seven oldest cities of India. Studies have shown that the ruins are artificial in nature. Several artifacts have been discovered but perhaps none as important as one artifact believed to date from 7500 BC, supporting the theory that the remains found in the gulf of Cambay are in fact those of the legendary city of Lord Krishna. It is believed that the incredible city was submerged underwater after the death of Lord Krishna.
Another ancient city worth mentioning is certainly the submerged city of Thonis-Heracleion near Alexandria. It is believed that the ruins were submerged in the sea by an earthquake about 1,500 years ago and remains hidden until now.
Archaeologists have discovered hundreds of artifacts and sculptures just of the shores of Alexandria. It is expected that the ruins are open to divers and tourists in the coming years.
The underwater complex of Yonaguni is surely one of the most important underwater discoveries of the century. The incredible structures are located near the coast of Japan and according to experts, the monuments date back to at least 10.000 BC.
As you can see, there are dozens of underwater cities that have been found in recent years. All of them tell a similar story. Earth as we know it was very different in the distant past.

In 2001 Pauline Zalitzki a marine engineer and her better half Paul Weinzweig found evidence of incredible manmade structures deep within the Atlantic ocean.
Paul owned a Canadian company called Advanced Digital Communication (ADC) which was working in close association with the Cuban Government on a survey mission. It was one of the four firms probing the sea while searching for treasure-laden ships from Spanish colonial era. The exploration was being conducted along the coast of the Guanahacabibes Peninsula in the Pinar del Río Province of Cuba.
Advanced Sonar equipment was being used by the team to study the Cuban waters when they noticed strange rocks and granite structures on the sea floor. The objects were symmetrical and geometrical stone shapes unlike what you would expect to find closely resembling remnants of an urban civilization. The search covered an area of 2 square kilometers with a depth of between 2000 feet and 2460 feet.
For a closer examination, the team sent an underwater visual robot that re-recorded images of the structures in better resolution and clarity. The new pictures determined formations that were slightly pyramidal while others were circular, made of massive smooth stones which resembled hewn granite. Size of the pyramids reportedly measured approximately 8 feet by 10 feet in height and width. Some rocks were stacked upon each other while others were not and at much further distance.
It was surprising for the researchers to see that stones resembling an urban complex could be sunk so deeply into the sea. How did a massive array of stones relocate to the floor of the sea was a mystery no one would solve.
The ADC team did not want to come to any conclusions seeing how the images could have been misinterpreted. They were reluctant to agree that they could be remains of a sunken city without further investigation. Fragments of the site were sent to , a marine geologist who studied the pieces to conclude that the test results were very unusual.
Findings suggest that such magnificent stonework would have taken 50,000 years or more to sink to such depths of the sea. “It was beyond the capability of cultures of that time to establish such complex structures” said Manuel Iturralde. “To explain these samples in a geological point of view is very hard” He added.
Soon, news agencies reported similarities between the recent discovery and the lost city of Atlantis. However, the ADC team trashed any such speculation and stated the discovery cannot be compared. “The story is a myth” said Zalitzki, “What we have found are most likely the remnants of a local culture”.
Researchers are quick to share local legends of Maya and the native Yucatecos who describe a settlement inhabited by their ancestors. Their entire island was washed away by the waves of the sea. Iturralde was not ready to accept any theories which connect the discovery to lost civilizations. He mentioned that the rock formations could be miraculous creations of the Mother Nature and nothing more. A specialist in underwater archaeology at Florida State University added “It would be cool if they were right, but it would be real advanced for anything we would see in the New World for that time frame. The structures are out of time and out of place.”
The Cuban government lead by President Fidel Castro also became greatly involved in finding the truth behind the strange discovery along with National Geography Society and Cuba’s National Museum. A tremendous interest among the countries citizens and the media wanted to finally connect the dots and declare the discovery to be something ancient and magnificent.
Underworld: The Mysterious Origins of Civilization, a book written by Graham Hancock provides interesting details about a number of submerged discoveries. The publication lists several underwater structures found and their location. Most reside at only at 120 meters under the oceans which is a fact of its own since level of the sea never fell below this depth since humans started to walk the planet. The unusual exception to this happens to be the sunken city of Cuba. It is located roughly 2000 to 2400 feet below the water level. There is slight possibility that the structures may have existed on the surface of the earth and were eventually washed away by the waves. If the structures really sank to great depths, it must be because of colossal tectonic events and not by rising sea levels.
It has been more than ten years that the discovery was made. The publicity and enthusiasm about the mysterious deep sea city has faded from the media and tabloids. Research is now at a standstill and without additional data it appears all answers are clouded in uncertainty. But the first sonar images of what was dubbed a lost city did create a tremendous impact on the Cuban government and her people. The world is always fascinated by the mystery of an ancient civilization, and for a time the sunken city of Cuba was one of the most bizarre. It still lies underwater, at peace in the oceans depths and is as puzzling as ever.
